Massage & Recovery

Sports Massage & Deep Tissue Massage in Portrush

Tailored hands-on treatment for muscular tension, training load, maintenance and recovery — shaped around how you feel on the day, never a fixed routine.

The approach

Firm when it needs to be. Adapted when it doesn't.

Paul McKirgan is an Advanced Lymphatic & Sports Massage Therapist, qualified to VTCT Level 4 in Sports Massage. He is known for firmer pressure where it is appropriate — but more pressure is not automatically better.

Some people book because they're sore and tight after training, a physical job, long travel or simply a demanding week — and want to feel looser and more comfortable again.

Every appointment begins with a short conversation about how you're feeling and what you need. Treatment is then shaped around the tissue, the area and the person on the table that day — firmer and more targeted where tension calls for it, slower and lighter where it doesn't.

The aim is always the right approach for you, not a routine repeated on every client.

What people book for

From training days to demanding weeks — massage that helps recovery.

Post-training tightness

Sore, heavy or stiff muscles after training, matches or events — support recovery so you feel ready to move again.

Between sessions & event prep

Work on tight areas between training sessions, or loosen up ahead of an event or a demanding week.

Maintenance during busy periods

Regular sessions to stay on top of tension while you're training hard or working long hours — maintenance between periods of higher load.

Manual work & long days

Neck, shoulder and back stiffness from physically demanding work, long days at a desk, driving or travel.

Getting back to normal activity

If you've had a quieter stretch and are easing back into exercise or everyday movement, massage can help once it's appropriate for you.

A preference for firmer work

Some people simply respond best to a firmer, whole-body maintenance massage. If that's you, you're in the right place.

Massage & recovery

Where massage fits into recovery.

Massage can be a useful part of a wider recovery routine — helping ease muscular tightness and stiffness so your body feels more comfortable and ready to move again.

Clients often use it around training blocks, events, physically demanding work or periods of muscular overload, as a way of maintaining how they feel between the heavier days.

It's worth being clear about what it is and isn't: massage is not a substitute for medical assessment or rehabilitation where those are needed, and treatment should never be used to push through an acute injury. If something needs a different kind of care, Paul will say so.

Your appointment

What treatment can look like.

Sessions start with a brief consultation — what's bothering you, how long it's been there and what you'd like from the appointment. From there, the session is hands-on and unhurried.

Depending on what presents on the day, treatment may draw on general soft tissue work, slower stripping techniques along the muscle, more targeted firm or deep work on specific areas, and mobility or muscle-energy-style approaches where they're appropriate. Not every technique is used in every session — the treatment follows what your body needs, not a checklist.

Some sessions focus on one overloaded area; others work more broadly across the body as a general recovery session. Which one suits you depends on what you need that day — and can change from one appointment to the next.

Sessions are usually 30, 45, 60 or 90 minutes. Longer appointments allow time for more thorough work across multiple areas.

A common question

Does sports massage have to hurt?

No. Firmer pressure can be useful, and many clients genuinely prefer it — but pain is not a measure of how effective a treatment is.

You should feel that the work is purposeful, not that you have to endure it. Pressure is adjusted throughout the session, and you're encouraged to say at any point if you'd like it changed.

For everyone

Not sporty? That's fine.

Despite the name, sports massage isn't only for athletes. Most of the people who book are dealing with the ordinary accumulation of tension — from desks, driving, physical work, stress or simply day-to-day life.

If your shoulders live somewhere near your ears, your back feels stiff by the end of the week, or you just don't move as easily as you'd like, this treatment is for you too.

The wider clinic

When firmer work isn't the right fit.

If tissue is very tender, swollen, healing from surgery or simply unsuited to firm pressure, other Tidal approaches may be more appropriate — including gentle Manual Lymphatic Drainage and Deep Oscillation® Therapy.

Paul will always tell you honestly if a different treatment would serve you better.
